Avaliação de uma Plataforma de Informação no Mercado do Caju da Guiné-Bissau - 2019 a 2023

BELAB developed a digital market information system between 2019 and 2022 to improve the cashew market in Guinea-Bissau, in partnership with the National Cashew Agency, MTN and NGO Nitidae. The implementation and evaluation of this market information system (SIM) was financed by PEP, PEDL and the Government of Guinea-Bissau. The objective of SIM was to provide reliable, quality information about the cashew market and increase transparency in the cashew sector.

Guinea-Bissau's economy is heavily dependent on cashew, which represents more than 90% of exports and more than 40% of annual household income, but faces information problems and price volatility.

The N'kalô market information system sends weekly, during the cashew nut sales season, voice and text messages with information on new developments in the cashew market, producer-level price ranges by region and sales advice . Agronomic advice was also sent, and the system can even share climate information.

BELAB evaluated the impact of this system with a national RCT in 290 villages, surveying 1,988 producers through face-to-face and telephone interviews. The study evaluated a positive impact on the price and income of producers who had free access to the information system.

In 2021, the platform reached over 2,000 paying subscribers. In 2022, the number of subscribers rose to over 3,000.

A new project has been started to improve the service, which includes a new impact assessment to improve the information system.
